A life has been taken
And it shouldn’t have been
We are waiting for grace
To wash away this grave sin
The sun is still rising
To present a new day
Yet the emptiness lingers
The memories will not fade
Oh! why hadn’t Providence
Let us escape from this place
Had he not seen our troubles
Throughout time and thru space
Our fortunes degraded
As our spirits debased
As I looked out the window
And wondered?
What could have been?
Tears filled my eyes
At the thoughts of our sin
What will it portend?
For our dear departed friend
Just then it so happened
A murder of crows filled the air
They flew all together
Making acrobatic moves tinged with bombastic flair
At once they moved in unison
And perched stealthily on a tree
There followed deathly silence
Then a stirring of the breeze
After a bit
One started to caw
Then another one started
Then more
And then more!
My puzzlement grew
At this concerted show the crows were putting on
Then suddenly they flew away
In an instant
They were gone!
At the bottom of the tree
A faint figure caught my eye
A dead crow!
Don’t you know!
I let out a startled cry!
His inky black quilled feathers stilled
Lightly blowing in the wind
I realized just then
It had been a ceremony
For their silky black flying brethren
With a solemn prayer to the heavens
And a nod to the cloudless sky
I thanked the crows
For who knows?
Without their help
I suppose
I couldn’t have ever endeavored
To wish my beloved
A fateful goodbye
